Former Dickinson State Baseball Player Signs Pro Contract
Former Blue Hawk Dan Morari signed a pro contract to play for Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League. He has become the 5th Blue Hawk to sign a pro contract since 2002. Morari was a standout left handed pitcher for the Blue Hawks during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He helped lead the Blue Hawks to regular season and conference tournament titles in 2006 and 2007. The Blue Hawks had an overall record of 67-32 during his two seasons.
Morari was a 2nd team All Dakota Athletic Conference selection following the 2007 season after ending the year with a 4-0 record with an ERA of 2.62 in 79.0 innings. He holds the DSU single season record of 96 strikeouts. His final season as a Blue Hawk, he held opponents to a .226 average while issuing just 19 base on balls. He started 11 games on the mound and had three complete games and two shutouts during the 2007 season.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity for Dan,” says DSU head coach Duane Monlux. “He was a very good pitcher for us for two years. He was also an outstanding student, garnering DAC Scholar Athlete honors twice as well. I think Dan will do very well in the Golden League and I am very excited to see how he progresses this season.”

Blue Hawks Split on the Road against Trojans W6-4 and L9-10
|
Junior short stop Derrick Gunderson went 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's!
|
The Blue Hawks went into Saturday’s back to back games against Dakota State in first place. Dakota State was in third and only one game behind Dickinson State University. After Saturday’s DAC competitions nothing changed for either team with the Blue Hawks winning game one 6-4 and barely losing game two 9-10; home field advantage seemed to give the Trojans a slight edge.
In game one it was Julian Ramirez pitching eight solid innings, striking out nine batters and Chase Doremus relieving him the last inning and striking out two that helped earn the win. The Blue Hawks acquired most of their offense in the seventh inning when they scored three runs off of two homers: Liam Foran started off the inning by singling to right field and later stole second base. Nolan Bracken steps to the plate and drills a 2 run home run (his ninth), over the right field fence on a 1-1 count. Kevin Park follows suit and hits a homer (his eighteenth), over the right field fence on a 0-0 count.
Nolan Bracken went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s, Kevin Park 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, Mike Nash 1 for 4, Cole Zamira 2 for 4, Chris Young 1 for 2, and Derrick Gunderson 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.
Game two was very close with the Trojans barely sneaking past the Blue Hawks 9-10. Most of Dickinson’s runs were scored in the top of the fourth inning: Cole Zamira singled to left and on a passed ball he was able to advance to second. The next pitch was wild and Zamira advanced to third. Yet again the pitch was wild and Zamira was able to trot into home plate. As no surprise Chris Young reached first base on a walk. Kade Larson comes in to pinch run for Young. Derrick Gunderson hits a single shot to left field and Larson advances to second base. Hector Sanchez bunted and reached second on a wild throw, while Larson scored, and Gunderson advanced to third. Liam Foran hits a single down the left field line, scoring Gunderson, and Sanchez advanced to third.
Kevin Park went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI’s, Mike Nash went 2 for 3, Cole Zamira went 1 for 4, Chris Young went 1 for 2, Derrick Gunderson went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s, and Hector Sanchez went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI’s.
The Blue Hawks are now 28-16 overall and 12-6 in the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Blue Hawks finish up conference play today with a double header against Dakota State today.

The Blue Hawks had plenty of offense for their double header against Mayville; with more runs and fewer errors, but were very narrowly upset by the visiting Comets 10-12 and 7-9. In game one it was the bottom of the fourth that produced the most runs for the Blue Hawks and the most exciting with two home runs:
Nolan Bracken led off the inning with a walk, bringing Kevin Park to the plate. Park did not waste any time and swung on the first pitch he saw. He drove a two run homer over the left field fence, his 13th of the year. Willie Sandez, like Park, took the first pitch he saw and drove the ball over the left field fence for his 12th home run this season.
Nolan Bracken went 1 for 3, Kevin Park 4 for 5 with 3 RBI’s, Mike Nash 2 for 5 with 1 RBI, Willie Sandez 3 for 3 with 4 RBI’s, and Cole Zamira 2 for 4.
In game two the Blue Hawks jumped out of the gate and picked up four runs in the second inning, but Mayville had some steady offense down the stretch for the win:
Willie Sandez led off the inning by drilling a double down the right field line; bringing up Cole Zamira. Zamira hits a single shot into right field and Sandez advances to third base. Derrick Gunderson hits a blast between right and center field, ends up on third, and drove in Sandez and Zamira. Chris Young hits a shallow shot to right field and Gunderson scores. Hector Sanchez comes in to pinch run for Young on first. Liam Foran hits a nice double between right and center field bringing in Sanchez for their last score of the inning.
Kade Larson went 1 for 3, Liam Foran 1 for 2, Mike Nash 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, Willie Sandez 1 for 1, Cole Zamira 1 for 3, Derrick Gunderson 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Ben Stanbury 1 for 1, and Chris Young 1 for 2.

In an incredibly perfect day, weather wise, the Blue Hawk Baseball Team defeated Mayville State University in a double header 10-9 and 10-4. In the first game of the day it was Julian Ramirez pitching an almost complete game with 8.2 innings pitched and Andrew Grafton coming in to finish off for him. Ramirez struck out an amazing fifteen batters and was instrumental in the win. In game two it was Ryan Saunders that pitched 6.1 innings, striking out 7, and Andrew Grafton came in to relieve him and finish off the Comets.
In game it was the bats of the Blue Hawks that pulled them, literally, through at the end. Going into the bottom of the ninth inning the Hawks were down by one run:
Up first was designated hitter Willie Sandez, who was already 4 for 4 on the day with three home runs! Sandez did not waste any time by taking the first pitch over the center field fence and giving him his fourth home run of the game! After a ground out by the Blue Hawks Tury Escobedo pinch hits and reaches first on a walk. Derrick Gunderson comes in to pinch run for Escobedo. After eyeing a couple of pitches Chris Young picks his pitch, hits a double to center, and with a close play at home Gunderson scores.
In game two the Blue Hawks trailed by a run or two for most of the game until the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning; scoring 4 runs in each. Bottom of the sixth inning:
Chris Young leads off the inning and hits a double down the 3rd base line. Hector Sanchez steps up next, hits a single through the infield, and advances Young to third. After a quick pitching change Sanchez steals second. Liam Foran hits a sacrifice to right field and Young scores. Nolan Bracken hits a deep double to left-center field and scores Sanchez. Later Bracken steals third base. Kevin Park hits a deep sacrifice fly to right field and scores Bracken.

Junior Outfielder Liam Foran Goes 2 for 6 with 5 RBI's on the day. Hits 1st Grand Slam of season.

After a relatively slow couple of innings start the Blue Hawk Baseball Team had an explosion of offensive in both double header games versus Minot State University. The Blue Hawks ten run ruled the Beavers in both games by a score of 12-2 and are now 6-1 against Minot State this season. In game one it was the great pitching of sophomore, right hander Ryan Crossingham that kept the Beaver batters off balance; pitching five complete innings and striking out five. In game two it was the brilliant pitching of Tucker Slagle that picked up the win; pitching four innings and striking out three.
Game one saw the biggest offensive explosion by the Blue Hawks, in one inning (3rd inning), all year. They were able to pick up nine runs in a single inning and was accomplished in dramatic fashion:
Derrick Gunderson led off the inning with a single to right field. Next up was Chris Young who hit a deep double to right field advancing Gunderson to third base. Hector Sanchez comes in to pinch run for Young. Using a good eye Kade Larson reaches first base on a walk and loads the bases for Liam Foran. On a 1-0 count Foran blasts a grand slam shot over the right field fence. Nolan Bracken steps in after that and has a very tough act to follow, but does very well by hitting a solo home run over the right field fence on a 1-1 count. After that display of power Kevin Park, the Blue Hawks clean up hitter, steps in and drives yet another homerun over the right field fence. Minot quickly replaces their pitcher. Regardless of the pitching change Mike Nash comes up to bat and drives yet another home run over the right field fence, on a 1-0 count. Breaking up the streak was Cole Zamira with a single down the left field line. Derrick Gunderson comes to bat for the second time this inning and is hit by a pitch. Chris Young hits a single shot to center field, scoring Zamira, and advancing Gunderson to third. Hector Sanchez comes in again to pinch run for Young. Kade Larson hits a scorcher line drive past the Minot short stop, scoring Gunderson and putting Sanchez on second.
Kade Larson went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 3 with 4 RBI’s, Nolan Bracken 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Kevin Park 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Mike Nash 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Willie Sandez 2 for 3, Cole Zamira 1 for2, Derrick Gunderson 2 for 2 with 3 RBI’s, and Chris Young 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.
In game two the Blue Hawks used a more steady flow of offense, but still had one big inning (5th inning) in which they scored five runs:
Cole Zamira steps to the plate to start the inning and earns a walk; as does the next batter Logan Capp. Ben Stanbury lays down a sacrifice bunt and moves Zamira and Capp into prime scoring locations on third and second. Kade Larson is up next and is awarded yet another walk to load the bases. After a quick pitching change Liam Foran hits a single to right field, scoring Zamira, and advancing Capp to third- Larson to second. Nolan Bracken hits a very deep double to the right-center gap, scoring both Larson and Foran. Tury Escobedo nails a ball into the left-center field spot and scores Bracken for the fifth and final run in the inning for the Blue Hawks.
Kade Larson went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Nolan Bracken 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s Kevin Park 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, Mike Nash 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, Tury Escobedo 1 for 1 with 1 RBI, Cole Zamira 2 for 2, Derrick Gunderson 2 for 3, and Ben Stanbury 2 for 2.

In game one the Blue Hawks trailed the entire game going into the top of the eighth inning, where they eventually took the lead and won on a 3 run eighth inning and a 2 run ninth inning. It was Tucker Slagle picking up the win pitching, in 4½ innings pitched and striking out 3 batters. 9th Inning:
It was a two out rally in the ninth inning, with the Blue Hawks down by one run, that won the game. Liam Foram came to the plate and hit a deep double down the left field line and Ryan Kanzaki came in to pinch run for Foran. Nolan Bracken hits a solid double into left field scoring Kanzaki. Kevin Park has been on a hot streak for the Blue Hawks. In the double header he went and incredible 4 for 7, with 5 RBI's, and had a Grand Slam.
|
In another double header battle with Jamestown the Blue Hawks earn another split winning game one 7-2 and losing a close game two 10-14.
In game one the Blue Hawks used a big 4 run second inning to gain the lead and never looked back. Roberto Gonzalez (4-1 on the season) pitched a brilliant complete game, only allowing only 6 hits and striking out 5 batters. Second Inning:
Kevin Park led off the inning by getting hit with a pitch and then used his speed to steal second base. Mike Nash, sensing that the Jimmie pitcher was fluster, earned a walk. Willie Sandez steps in and watches as a wild pitch goes past the catcher, advancing Park and Nash to second and third. Sandez hits an inside pitch (single) to right field scoring Park and moving Nash to third. Another wild pitch advances Sandez to second base. Cole Zamira hits another single to right field scoring Nash and Sandez advances to third. Chris Young hits a deep single to center field and picks up two RBI’s as both Sandez and Zamira score.
Kevin Park went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Mike Nash 2 for 3, Willie Sandez 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, Cole Zamira 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Chris Young 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.
Game two was an offensive explosion by both teams as the Blue Hawks only had one fewer hit than the opponents- 13. They used a huge third inning (6 runs) to gain the lead, but were unable to maintain it to the end. Third inning:
Derrick Gunderson led off the inning with a single to left and was followed up with a single to right by Chris Young. Kade Larson came in to pinch run for Young. Hector Sanchez lays down a beautiful bunt, reaches first, and loads up the bases for Liam Foran. Foran hits a nice single into left field scoring Gunderson and keeps the bases loaded. Nolan Bracken hits another single to left, scores Larson and once again keeps the bases loaded. Off of a 1-1 count Kevin Park hits a grand slam home run over the left field fence.
Liam Foran went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, Nolan Bracken 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Kevin Park 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, Mike Nash 2 for 3 with 1RBI, Willie Sandez 2 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, Cole Zamira 2 for 4, and Derrick Gunderson 1 for 3.

Blue Hawks Split First Conference Road Games

Kevin Park, Junior 3rd Basemen, went 3 for 8 and had 7 RBI's in Double Header!
|
With the Blue Hawks playing their first DAC road games of the year, they came out a little slow in game one and lost 4-8, but got back in the swing of things in game two and won big 11-1.
Whether it was nerves, playing in their first conference road game or just a slow start the Blue Hawks were not able to generate any offense until late in game one. It was not until the eighth inning when the team put up 4 runs, but it was just a little too late as the Jimmies were more comfortable playing at home. Eighth inning:
Chris Young led off the inning hitting a single shot into right field and a few pitches later he easily stole second base. Liam Foran came to the plate and hit a single to center field scoring Young. Nolan Bracken was up next and used a good eye to reach first with a walk and moving Foran to second. Kevin Park stepped into the batter’s box and drove a 3 run homer over the center field fence.
Hector Sanchez 2 for 5, Liam Foran 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, Kevin Park 1 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, Mike Nash 2 for 4, Willie Sandez 2 for 4, and Chris Young 3 for 4.
Game 2 against the Jimmies was a much different story as the Blue Hawk blew them out 11-1. The Blue Hawks played a bit more loose and relaxed. Ryan Saunders had a big role in the win pitching 6 innings, allowing only 3 hits, striking out 7 batters, and picking up his second win of the season. The team had 3 innings in which they scored multiple runs, but it was their “great out of the gate” first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game:
Nolan Bracken led off the inning earning a walk and later stealing second with his speed. Kevin Park reached first off of another walk and, after a wild throw by Jamestown, Bracken scored. Mike Nash hit a single to right field scoring Park. Willie Sandez, with a 0-1 count, hits a 2 run blast over the right field fence.
Nolan Bracken went 1 for 2, Kevin Park 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, Mike Nash 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, Willie Sandez 1 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, and Derrick Gunderson 1 for3 with 1 RBI
Dickinson State U. 4 0 3 0 0 4 0 - 11 9 1
Jamestown College 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 3 4
The Blue Hawks play another double header Sunday (4-11-10) against Jamestown at 12:00 and 3:30.
Blue Hawks Sweep Another Team- NCAA DII Northern State University Wolves; As Ian Anderson Pitches No Hitter!

Lefty Freshman Pitcher Ian Anderson Pitches No Hitter In Win versus Wolves!!!
|
The Blue Hawks sweep another team, but instead of conference foe Minot it was NCAA Division II Northern State University 7-3 and 12-1. This was the fifth and sixth games in four days for the Blue Hawks and makes it seven wins in a row.
In the first game it was the brilliant pitching of Ryan Crossingham that kept the Wolves batters at bay. Ryan pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits and striking out two. The Blue Hawks offense was very smooth and fluid scoring runs in every inning except one. Their biggest offensive inning was three runs in the second inning:
Derrick Gunderson led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. The next two batters were put out but moved Gunderson into scoring position on third base. Liam Foran steps to the plate and hits a quick shot into center field for a single and his first RBI. Nolan Bracken uses a good eye and earns a walk to first, advancing Foran to second. Kevin Park hits a blooper into shallow center field and drives in both runners.
Hector Sanchez went 2 for 4, Liam Foran 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s, Nolan Bracken 1 for 2, Tury Escobedo 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Derrick Gunderson 2 for 2 with 1 RBI.
In the second game the Wolves ran into the amazing pitching of Ian Anderson and the offensive buzz saw of the Blue Hawks. Anderson pitched a no hitter in a six inning game and did not need to pitch the seventh inning as the Blue Hawks 10 run ruled the Wolves. Anderson had 21 batters come to the plate and he struck out four by himself. He had help from his teammates in the field and especially at the plate as the Blue Hawks put up five runs in the fifth inning:
Ben Stanbury leads off the inning and is hit by a pitch, bringing Hector Sanchez in to run for him. Sanchez immediately steals second to get into scoring position. Kade Larson singles to right field, advances to second on the throw, and Sanchez scores. Liam Foran knocks a deep shot to left field and Larson jogs home. On a 2-2 count Nolan Bracken hits a rocket over the right field fence for a two run homer. Mike Nash singles to left, bringing Willie Sandez up. Sandez doubles to left easily scoring Nash.
Kade Larson went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Ryan Kanzaki 1 for 1 with 3 RBI’s, Nolan Bracken 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s, Kevin Park 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Mike Nash 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Willie Sandez 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.
The Blue Hawks will be on the road for their next contests when they face conference opponent Jamestown College.

Senior, right fielder Nolan Bracken went an amazing 4 for 6 and drove in 5 RBI's!
|
In the second day, of another double header against Minot State, the Blue Hawks again win both games 11-8 and 10-5. In both contests the Blue Hawks did not even need to use their final at bat and are now 4-0 in conference play and push the Beavers down to 0-4.
In the first game it was the pitching of Ian Anderson that picked up the save and win for the Blue Hawks. The Hawks trailed for most of the game but it seems they always have a huge offensive inning where they break the game open. In this game it was the bottom of the 8th inning where they scored six runs and took the lead for good:
To start off the inning Mike Nash and Willie Sandez each earn a walk, bringing Cole Zamira to the plate. Zamira drives a deep shot into the left-center gap scoring Nash, advancing Sandez to third, and Zamira ends up standing on second. After a quick pitching change by Minot, Tury Escobedo nails a shot into deep left scoring two and ends up with a double. Chris Young lays down a sacrifice bunt moving Escobedo into prime scoring position on third. Escobedo quickly and easily comes home off of a single into right field by Hector Sanchez; who later steals second base. On the first pitch that Nolan Bracken sees he hits a two run blast over the center field wall. This put the Blue Hawks up once and for all, winning 11-8.
Hector Sanchez went 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, Liam Foram 1 for 3, Nolan Bracken 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, Keving Park 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Mike Nash 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Willie Sandez 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Cole Zamira 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, and Tury Escobedo 1 for 1 with 2 RBI’s.
In the second game of the day it was the Blue Hawks blowing the game open in another big inning. This time it was a large sixth burst and the pitching of Chase Doremus (4 strike outs) that earned Dickinson baseball the win:
Liam Foran Steps up to the plate, to start the inning, and hits an easy single to center field. Nolan Bracken lays down a sacrifice bunt down the third base line moving Foran into scoring position on second. Kevin Park hits a single to left scoring Foran. Using his speed Park steals second, bringing Mike Nash to bat. Nash doubles to center field and advances Park to third base. Willie Sandez singles to right field scoring Park, and advancing Nash to third. Cole Zamira singles to left scoring Nash and later steals second. Derrick Gunderson singles to deep left, scoring Zamira, and Gunderson advances to second base on the throw. After a replacement of the Minot pitcher, Chris Young singles to center field scoring Gunderson. This was the last score of the inning and put the Blue Hawks well out of reach for the Beavers 10-5.
Hector Sanchez went 1 for 5 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 3, Nolan Bracken 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Kevin Park 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, Willie Sandez 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Cole Zamira 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Derrick Gunderson 2 for 2 with 1 RBI, and Chris Young 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Junior 3rd Baseman Kevin Park goes 5 for 7 with 10 RBI's!
|
The Blue Hawk Baseball Team started off the first day of the DAC regular season with an offensive bang, defeating Minot State University twice 11-9 and 14-4.
The Blue Hawks led for most of the first game until the Beavers had a big sixth inning in which they scored 6 runs, putting the Beavers up 7-5. After picking up one run in the seventh the Blue Hawks retook the lead with a huge 5 run eighth inning:
Chris Young started off the inning by reaching base on a walk with Kade Larson coming in to pinch run for him. Hector Sanchez comes to the plate and hits a shot to the left-center gap, advanced Larson to third and Sanchez ends up with a stand up double. With two runners in prime scoring position Liam Foran hits a double to center field driving in both runners. Minot brings in a new pitcher to try and keep the Blue Hawks at bay, but it didn’t work. Nolan Bracken is the first to test out the new pitcher by laying down a well placed bunt. Bracken reaches first with his speed and moves Foran over to third. Kevin Park takes the first pitch he sees and drives it over the center field wall, for a three run homer.
With the Blue Hawks up 11- 8 the Beavers were only able to generate one more run at the top of the 9th inning and the Hawks did not even need their last at bat.
Hector Sanchez 2 for 5, Liam Foran 2 for 5 with 2 RBI’s, Nolan Bracken 2 for 5, Kevin Park 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, Willie Sandez 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, and Cole Zamira 3 for 5 with 1 RBI.
The Blue Hawks only needed to bat for four innings to absolutely crush the Beavers in the second game of the day 14-4; 10 running them. Ryan Saunders picked up the win pitching and struck out 7 batters. Never trailing the Hawks blew open the game in the bottom of the 4th inning when they racked up 7 runs:
Chris Young started off the inning by reaching base on a walk with Kade Larson coming in to pinch run for him. Hector Sanchez hits a single to center field, advancing Larson to second base. Liam Foran hits another single into center field loading the bases for Nolan Bracken. Using a good eye Bracken reaches first with a walk, bringing in Larson and advancing the other runner. Off of a new pitcher Kevin Park hits a single to center field scoring Sanchez and Foran. Mike Nash hits a deep sacrifice fly to center field and drives in Foran and puts Bracken on third base. Willie Sandez gets hit by a wild pitch and loads the bases for Tury Escobedo. He hits a deep shot down the left field line scoring 2 runs. Chris Young comes to bat once again in the inning and hits a shot down the 3rd base line scoring Zamira.
Liam Foran 3 for 3, Nolan Bracken 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Kevin Park 3 for 3 with 6 RBI’s, Mike Nash 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, Cole Zamira 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Tury Escobedo 1 for 1 with 2 RBI’s, and Chris Young 1 for 2 with 3 RBI’s.
The Blue Hawks are now 2-0 in conference play with Minot dropping to 0-2. The two teams play again tomorrow April 2nd at Glendive, Montana- 1 and 3pm.

Senior Right Fielder Nolan Bracken hit for the cycle, going 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's
|
On the final day of the DAC Pre Season Baseball Tourney in South Dakota the Blue Hawks split a pair of games; losing to Minot State University 5-9 and winning big against Valley City State University 17-4.
Against Minot the Blue Hawks struggled a little on offense but were still able to put up 5 runs on 8 hits and most of the damage came in the second inning. The big offensive inning started on a double to right field by Mike Nash. That was followed up with another double by Willie Sandez driving in Nash for the first run of the inning. Following suit Cole Zamira comes to the plate and bashes yet another double to center field advancing Sandez to third. With Minot’s pitcher losing focus the next pitch is wild and gets by the catcher allowing Sandez to score and advancing Zamira to third. Chris Young comes to the plate and hits a blooper to right field scoring Zamira. Hector Sanchez is next up and hits a shot down the left field line scoring Young for what would be the last run of the inning.
For the game Hector Sanchez 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, Cole Zamira 2 for 3, and Chris Young 2 for 3 with 1 RBI.
In the final game of the Tourney the Blue Hawks were firing on all cylinders and blew out Valley City 17-4. The offensive flood gates exploded open for the Blue Hawks as they had 19 hits in only 6 innings of play. Chase Doremus picked up the pitching victory and struck out seven batters in only 5 innings. The Blue Hawks picked up seven runs in the 4th and two in the 5th, but it was their 6th inning, where they scored eight runs, that really broke the back of Valley City.
The offensive blitz started off with a blast to the left-center gap by Liam Foran, he easily had a stand up double. Nolan Bracken came to the plate and liked the first pitch he saw so much that he drove it out of the park for a two run homer. Using a good eye Mike Nash reached first off of a walk. Just like Bracken, Willie Sandez came to the plate next and drove the first pitch he saw over the center field wall. Derrick Gunderson hits a single to left and Logan Capp comes in to pinch run for him. Off of a wild pitch Capp advances to second and later Kade Larson earns a walk to first base. Hector Sanchez comes to the plate and singles to center field scoring Capp and advancing Larson to second. After now batting through the entire line up Foran again comes to the plate in this inning and hits a nice single to center field; scoring Larson and advancing Sanchez to second. Bracken again comes to the plate after his earlier two run homer and hits a triple to right field scoring Sanchez and Foran.
For the game Hector Sanchez 2 for 5 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's, Nolan Bracken 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's, Mike Nash 2 for 2 with 3 RBI's, Willie Sandez 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's, Cole Zamira 2 for 4, Derrick Gunderson 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, and Chris Young 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's.

Blue Hawks Come Out Sluggish In DAC Pre Season Tourney

Senior Outfielder Hector Sanchez
|
After a very long 10 day trip to Texas and New Mexico the previous week, the Blue Hawk Baseball Team may have shown some signs of being tired losing to Jamestown College 10-7 and to Dakota State University 3-1.
In the first game against Jamestown the Blue Hawks had a few hits but did not earn any runs until the third inning. With Chris Young on first Hector Sanchez comes to the plate and singles deep to center field, moving Young into prime scoring position on third. Sanchez then steals second with Liam Foram now coming to the plate. Foram hits a shot down the first base line and is put out, but not before driving Young in and advancing Sanchez to third. Kevin Park comes to the plate and rips a shot into left field scoring Sanchez.
The Blue Hawks did not generate any more offense until the bottom of the seventh inning when they were down 10-2. Things really got going for the team when Cole Zamira was on first and Ryan Kanzaki hits a single to right field, advancing Zamira to second. Chris Young comes to the plate and is hit by a wild pitch. Both runners advanced, but Kade Larson has to come in and run for Young. Hector Sanchez comes to the plate with the bases juiced and hits a deep shot to center field, driving in Zamira. Again with the bases juiced Liam Foram steps in to the batters box. Foran steps into the pitch he liked and crushed a shot deep into left field. He scored all runners and jetted around to earn a stand up triple. Kevin Park quickly drives in Foran with a single in the gap between left and center field. Despite this big five run offensive inning, the Blue Hawks come up short by the score of 10-7.
The big guns for the Blue Hawks were Hector Sanchez 3 for 4 with 1 RBI, Liam Foran 1 for 4 with 4 RBI’s, and Kevin Park 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
In the second game of the day the Blue Hawks came up a bit short and were upset by Dakota State University. The team seemed a little out of sync offensively and was only able to score one run in top of the fourth inning. With a good eye Nolan Bracken earned a lead off walk. Derrick Gunderson came to the plate with two outs and hit a deep shot to center field. Bracken used his speed to score with Gunderson earning a stand up double.
For the Blue Hawks Hector Sanchez went 1 for 3, Nolan Bracken 1 for 2, Derrick Gunderson 1 for 3 with 1 RBI, and Cole Zamira 1 for 3.
The Blue Hawks play two more games today Monday, March 29, in the DAC Preseason Tournament:

What a difference one day makes for the Blue Hawk baseball team. After barely losing two close games by one run each, the day before, the Blue Hawks come out on Thursday and sweep the University of the Southwest 11-2 and 2-1.
In the first game it was Dickinson State University pitcher Roberto Gonzalez pitching a great game, got the win for the Blue Hawks, and struck out five batters. Gonzales had some great back up from his teammates as the teams offense got into a smooth groove with 15 total hits. Liam Foran did the most damage for the Blue Hawks going an incredible 4 for 5 from the plate and driving in 2 RBI’s. Also contributing to the teams effort were fellow teammates Kevin Park 2 for 4 with one RBI, Nolan Bracken 1 for 2 with one RBI, and Cole Zamira 2 for 3 with one RBI.
DSU 203 141 0 — 11 15 1
USW 011 000 0 — 2 7 3
The second game of the day was unlike the blow out of the first game; it was an extremely close nail biting game, with the Blue Hawks prevailing 2-1. It was the stellar pitching of junior pitcher Chase Doremus that kept Southwest batters at bay. Doremus only allowed four hits on the day and struck out five. Ryan Kanzaki (2 for 3) and Cole Zamira (1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s) did the major damage for the Blue Hawks offensively.
DSU 000 002 0 — 2 5 1

Senior pitcher Ryan Sanders throws a 6 hitter
|
The Dickinson State University baseball team had a rough day as they were upset by the University of the Southwest (New Mexico). The two teams played a double header and the Blue Hawks were very narrowly edged out both times by the scores of 19-18 and 4-3.
The first game of the day was an offensive fans dream as the two teams combined for 37 total runs. There were some great highlights from the Blue Hawks with Derrick Gunderson hitting a three run homer and Hector Sanchez’s grand slam blast to center field.
The second game of the day was more of a pitchers duel than an offense explosion as Ryan Saunders threw a six hitter for the Blue Hawks. Despite Saunders great pitching, there was one unfortunate hit by a member of Southwest in the second inning. The result of the hit was a three run homer, which barely got over the left field fence. These were the runs that put the University of the Southwest up for good and brings the Blue Hawks record to 8-6.
The two teams will square off again on Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 12:00pm and 2:30pm.

Junior Short Stop Derrick Gunderson- 3 for 4, 2 doubles, run

The third and final day of the RussMatt Invitational (Phoenix, Arizona) was not kind to the Blue Hawk Baseball Team (8-4) as they were narrowly defeated by Brockport University 10-9 and John Hopkins University 11-5.
DSU looked to have the game in hand after the top of the 10th inning, where they scored one run to lead Brockport. Zamira hit a blast to left field for a triple and drove in fellow teammate Bracken. However, Brockport rallied in the bottom of the 10th inning with a pair of singles and a double to steal one away from the Blue Hawks. The Blue Hawks were led by Hector Sanchez- 3 for 4, triple, stolen base, 1 RBI and Nolan Bracken- 2 for 2, triple, double, 2 HBP, and a run.
Dickinson 100 320 002 1 — 9 13 3
Brockport 100 160 000 2 — 10 14 6
After the very emotional upset against Brockport University the Blue Hawks came out a little sluggish against John Hopkins University. They allowed a total of 7 runs in John Hopkins first two at bats and then began to settle down. The Blue Hawks were able to chip away at the lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning, 1 in the fourth, and another in the sixth. But, it was Johns scoring another 5 runs in the last three innings that sealed the Hawks fate. The Blue Hawks were led by Derrick Gunderson- 3 for 4, 2 doubles, run and Kevin Park- 2 for 5, home run, double, and 2 RBI’s.
Johns HU 250 000 131 — 11 19 2

Center Fielder Hector Sanchez hits game winning single to left field in the bottom of 7th inning for the win. Goes 3 for 5 on the day with 4 RBI's.

Day two of the RussMatt Invitational (Phoenix, Arizona) was good to the Blue Hawks (8-2) as they picked up two large double header victories over Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State University. The Blue Hawks defeated the Comets by the scores of 13-2 and 4-3. Right handed pitcher Roberto Gonzales picked up the first win pitching for the Hawks, striking out three batters and only allowing four hits.
In the first game the Blue Hawks shot out of the gates and picked up seven runs in their first at bat. The explosion of offense was started with a two run double to right field by Park, which drove in Sanchez and Foran. Later Bracken laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Park to third and Nash to second. Gunderson singled to left scoring Park and advancing Nash to third. Nash eventually scored off of a sacrifice fly to left by Zamira. Kanzaki reached first on a walk which moved Gunderson into scoring position on second. Young then singled to center field, scoring Gunderson and advancing Kanzaki to second. A wild pitch advanced the two runners into prime scoring position on third and second, with the batter, Sanchez eventually reaching first base off of a walk. With the bases juiced Foran steps to the plate and nails a single deep to left field. Kanzaki and Larson both score, putting the Blue Hawks ahead by seven runs in the first inning.
The Comets were not able to generate any runs until the fifth inning when they picked up one. The Blue Hawks did not pick up any more runs until the top of the sixth inning when they had another big offensive surge of six. Foran started off the inning with a single to center field and eventually reached third off of a wild throw. Park then singled to center and drove Foran home for the first run of the inning. Park easily scored as Nash hits a stand up triple to deep center field. After Bracken reached first, from a walk, Gunderson grounds out to third scoring Nash. Zamira singles to center while moving Bracken over to third. After the bases get loaded from a Kanzaki walk, Young comes to bat and singles to left field; driving one run in. With the bases juiced Sanchez steps to the plate and hits a shot to right field scoring two runs.
The Comets were only able to get one more run in the sixth inning and with the Blue Hawks being up by more than 10 runs (13-2) the game was called; due to the 10 run rule.
Game 2 of the double header was much closer with the Blue Hawks still coming out ahead by the score of 4-3. Mayville struck first blood by getting one run in the top of the second inning. It was not until the Blue Hawks two run, third inning that they were able to take the lead (2-1). Zamira started off the inning with a good eye and advanced to first off of a walk. Zamira advanced to second and then third off of a sacrifice bunt by Kanzaki and a Capp ground out to second. With Zamira in prime scoring position Sanchez hits a shot to center field and earned a stand up double. The speedy Sanchez then steals third base and Foran reaches first off of a walk. Park steps to the plate and hits a shot down the left field line scoring Sanchez.
The Blue Hawks were able to pick up another run in the fifth inning and the Comets up one each in the sixth and seventh inning.
Going into the bottom of the seventh inning the score was tied 3-3, with the Blue Hawks coming to bat. Kanzaki steps to the plate first and hits a shot to center field; the hard hit is bobbled by the center fielder and he commits an error. Larson comes in to pinch run for Kanzaki at second base. Capp lays down a sacrifice bunt to advance Larson to third. This brings Sanchez to the plate, who hits a single shot to left field scoring Larson, and winning the game 4-3.

Senior Pitcher Julian Ramirez (3-0)

In the first day of the RussMatt Invitational, in Phoenix Arizona, the Blue Hawks split a double header with Northern State University (NCAA Division II); 9-4 win and a 1-4 loss.
In the win it was the pitching effort of senior Julian Ramirez (3-0) and a third inning, 7 run explosion that propelled the DSU baseball team to victory. This third inning surge saw all the Blue Hawk batters go through their hitting rotation once and some even batted twice. Park, Nash, Bracken, Gunderson, Zamira, and Larson each had a single in the inning with Park having two. In the fourth inning the Blue Hawks pushed their lead up with two more runs. Bracken led off the inning with a triple to deep center field and was quickly driven in with a single from Gunderson. With the lead increasing the Blue Hawks became more aggressive and had Gunderson steal second. Gunderson easily trotted home off of a Zamira triple to left field.
In the second game the Blue Hawks were not able to generate enough offense to win and left 6 runners stranded on base. Their lone run came in the fourth inning off of Esobedo’s single to left, which drove in Bracken.
The Blue Hawks continue the invitational tomorrow as they face Mayville State University in a double header.
Blue Hawks Win Four in Metrodome
The Dickinson State University baseball team’s annual trip to the Metrodome in Minneapolis was a successful one as the Blue Hawks went 4-0 over two days. DSU swept Northwestern College (MN) 9-2 and 3-2 before taking two against Bethel University (MN) 3-2 and 9-0.
Game 1: DSU 9—Northwestern 2
The Blue Hawks used a strong pitching performance from Julian Ramirez and a couple of big innings to down the Eagles in game one. Senior Julian Ramirez tossed a complete game, upping his record to 2-0 on the season. He pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. The Eagles plated single unearned runs in both the third and fourth innings. DSU got on the board in the top of the 3rd on an RBI triple by Kevin Park. DSU added three more in fourth and one in the sixth. The Hawks put the game out of reach in top of the 7th as they plated four runs. Mike Nash homered to lead off the seventh and Nolan Bracken doubled and scored in the inning as well. Bracken became DSU all-time leader in runs scored, scoring his 97th run as a Blue Hawk in the 7th inning. Liam Foran and Derrick Gunderson both had three hits in the game for DSU.
Game 2: DSU 3—Northwestern 2
The Hawks used some late inning heroics to stage a come from behind win against Northwestern. The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Kevin Votaw. That is all the scoring that would take place until the bottom of the sixth inning. Ryan Saunders and Mark Meredith were engaged in a pitching duel for most of the contest. The Hawks would eventually tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the sixth inning on an error by the Eagles. However, Northwestern would respond in the top of the seventh, taking a 2-1 lead when Zach Markwith scored on a wild pitch by DSU relief pitcher Bronson Collins. Not to be outdone, the Hawks mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hector Sanchez led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Liam Foran sacrifice fly. Junior Kevin Park then singled, stole second and later scored on a game winning single by Derrick Gunderson.
Game 3: DSU 3—Bethel 2
The Hawks won their second consecutive game by a score of 3-2 in their last at bat. Bethel jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the second inning. Two Blue Hawk miscues led to the early lead. Roberto Gonzalez kept the Bethel bats at bay the rest of the game as DSU hung in there to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. The Hawks tied the game at 2-2 following a two-RBI single by Derrick Gunderson, scoring Liam Foran and Kevin Park. DSU would claim victory in the bottom half of the inning when Kade Larson scored on a game winning double by Mike Nash.
Game 4: DSU 9—Bethel 0
Chase Doremus’ pitching performance was the highlight of DSU’s final game in the Metrodome. The junior right-hander tossed 6.0 innings, tallying 10 K’s while allowing just one hit with two walks. Tucker Slagle pitched the final 1.0 inning for DSU, registering one strikeout and not allowing a base runner. DSU scored two runs in the 2nd inning and scored at least one run in five of the next six innings to secure the win. Six Blue Hawks had two hits in the game as the team finished with 14 hits in the game.
“I’m pleased with how we played in the Metrodome,” said Duane Monlux. “We saw some good things the two days we were in there. We do need to pick our defense. We have been giving away a few too many runs; we need to clean that up. I would like to see us be a little more consistent at the plate as well. I think that will come with time. Our starting pitching has been real solid. We will definitely need to continue that on our trip down south.”
The Hawks’ next action is March 13th when they take on Northern State University in Mesa, Arizona. DSU is currently 5-1 on the season.
Blue Hawks Open 2010 Season with a Split with NCAA II Metro State

Both pitchers combined for 13.0 innings of work, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. The Blue Hawks had the early lead, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. Kade Larson scored on an RBI single by Mike Nash in the first inning and Willie Sandez scored a run in the second on an RBI double by Liam Foran. That was all the offense the Blue Hawks could muster. With DSU leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth, the wheels of the defense fell off. The Hawks gave up three unearned runs in the inning. They team followed that with another three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 7-2 in favor of Metro State. Ryan Crossingham tossed the final 2.0 innings for the DSU, surrendered three runs (zero earned), on four hits and one walk with two K’s.
“It was good for us to get outside and see what we need to work on,” says Blue Hawk Head Coach Duane Monlux. “I thought our pitchers did a real nice job today. We only gave up one earned run in the doubleheader. Our defense was not good at all. We definitely need to work on that part of our game. Hitting was behind, which is to be expected early in the season. We played a very good team today and to come away with a split this early is a positive sign.”
The Hawks next scheduled game is March 1st when the team takes on Northwestern College (MN) in the Metrodome. Game time is 12:15 pm CST.

Outfield: The outfield is probably the area on the team with the most depth. A host of Blue Hawks could roam the outfield for DSU this season. Senior Nolan Bracken will head the list. He has been a three-year starter for DSU. He enters the season as DSU’s all-time leader in hits (146) and walks (55). He is tied for the school record with 96 runs scored. He was named to the 2009 DAC Gold Glove team after posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percent. He was also named 1st team All DAC in 2008. He was 7 for 14 at the plate with 12 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Holland will move to the outfield after spending last season in the infield for DSU. Sanchez joins DSU after a one-year stint at Cal Lutheran University and two seasons at the College of the Desert. He has been a consistent .300 hitter all three years of college baseball. He appeared in four games and pitched in 3.1 innings with four K’s and just one base on balls. He had an ERA of 0.00 and did not allow a run. Anderson and Overbo are both freshman from North Dakota. They will be looked at to provide some middle relief out of the bullpen for the Blue Hawks this season.
“The team is very excited about the upcoming season,” says DSU head coach Duane Monlux. “Practice has been going very good. I’ve seen a lot of positive things from our club thus far. If we can stay healthy on the mound and play solid defense behind our pitchers, we have a chance to be right in the mix of a lot of our games. We are thin with our pitching depth, so it will be imperative to keep those guys healthy. I think we have a solid defense and a steady hitting team. As always, we need to get off on the right foot in our preseason games so that we have confidence going into our conference season. It should be an interesting and exciting season.”
